Making an impact on society is difficult to do alone. To make a big impact, you need to work with colleagues and people around you. This is a fact that everyone knows, but it is difficult to put it into practice. Because, we have learned to do things alone rather than together, and we are accustomed to doing things alone.
In most fields, including development, the importance of communication is emphasized. This is because the results created together through communication are often better than the results created alone.
The education system in many Asian countries that I have experienced teaches students to do things alone rather than together. A specialist teacher teaches students the prescribed subjects, and checks whether the students understand the content well through homework and exams. Homework is often individual assignments, and of course, exams are taken alone. In these homework and exams, students do not need to communicate with anyone, and they do not need to collaborate with other students to get good grades.
I have been exposed to this environment for over 20 years. I am familiar with doing things alone and it has already become a habit. However, when I went out into society, there was almost nothing I could do alone, and I had to adapt to an environment where I could not live without communication. I had to learn how to work with others to produce results.
As far as I know, many countries still have this system. It is important to cultivate the ability to solve problems alone, but the talents that society wants are not these talents. On the contrary, if there is a person who tries to solve all problems alone in society, it makes many issues.
If you are a student now and feel discouraged because your academic performance is not good, you don’t need to be discouraged. What you are learning now is of course important, but it is not necessarily related to success in life, being an outstanding talent, or producing impactful results.
If you are currently employed and feel that the work evaluation given by the company or boss is lower than your own work evaluation, you need to review the way you are currently working. It is a good idea to check whether you are working alone, whether you are communicating enough and collaborating to produce results.
If you want to be an outstanding talent, you should abandon the habit of working alone that you are already familiar with and learn how to work together as soon as possible.
