This post is intended to share my thoughts after reading the book 함께 자라기.
In this book, an experiment is cited to learn about the learning frame and execution frame.
Elementary school children are randomly divided into two groups. One group is given an execution frame. “We want to see how well you can draw.”, “We want to measure your creativity.”, “We will score you.”, “You have to draw one picture each.” and so on. On the other hand, the other group of children is given a learning frame. “It’s time to experiment with the ways you haven’t drawn before.”, “Try experimenting with various methods.” and so on. (Omitted) After the drawing time is over, let’s observe the children’s behavior during the break time. The children in the execution frame are busy playing. There are many children in the learning frame who keep drawing. After the experiment, when we compare how much the children have learned about drawing, the children with the learning frame learn much more.
The execution frame is a framework that thinks that the current task is to achieve good results, and the learning frame is a framework that thinks about how much I can learn through the current task.
If your goal is growth through learning, the execution frame will be a disadvantageous choice.
Some people may say that their goal is to grow through learning, but they are currently too busy to learn while working. However, even in the same situation, some people say that they have learned a lot because of the current situation.
If you ask an employee who has been in the company for a year, you can see other patterns as follows.
- It hasn’t been a year since I joined the company, so I’m learning to read books, code, and work. So I’m not in a position to help anyone and I haven’t asked anyone because I haven’t figured out my work yet.
- It hasn’t been a year since I joined the company, so I’m asking a lot and learning. I found out that other team members were having a hard time with issues related to the XXX framework that I saw a lot on the subway during rush hour, so I helped. It hasn’t been a year since I joined the company, so I’m actively trying to help other team members because I’m not so busy.
Even in the same situation, you can act as a learning frame or as an execution frame according to your choices, actions, and reactions.
This is not to say that the execution frame is bad. However, in order to continue your work deeper and longer, you need to learn constantly, so a learning frame can be of great help to your career.
